As TPS Ends, Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project Reaffirms Its Commitment to Haitian Youth and Families.

Statement from Darnell Benoit, Executive Director of Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project:

Today is a devastating day for the hundreds of thousands of people whose Temporary Protected Status comes to an end. After the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to move forward with ending TPS for Haitians and Syrians on June 25, 2026, this decision not only puts Haitian families at immediate risk but sets the stage to strip protections from all 1.3 million TPS holders.

For the Haitian youth and families we serve every day, TPS allowed parents to work, young people to pursue their education and dreams, and families to rebuild their lives in safety after years of political instability, violence, and humanitarian crises in Haiti.

With reports that ICE is preparing targeted enforcement operations in Haitian communities, this will only cause more fear and uncertainty at the very moment families need stability the most. Our youth should be preparing for the new school year, applying to college, and planning their futures, not worrying whether their parents will lose their jobs, be detained, or be separated from their loved ones.

Ultimately, TPS was only a band-aid. The reality is we need full permanent protections for all immigrants, young and old, who call this country their home, for all of our neighbors. Immigrants are the future of this country and deserve to live with dignity.

Flanbwayan stands with all immigrant communities today, especially the Haitian youth we serve every day. They are the future of this city, of this country, and we will continue fighting until every family has the permanent protections, dignity, and security they deserve.

Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project is a youth membership–based organization serving Haitian immigrant English Language Learners (ELLs) in New York City, ages 14 to 21, providing culturally and linguistically responsive services that support immigrant youth and families, enhancing their quality of life through education and community connection.
