Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project was founded in 2005 as a youth membership-based organization serving English Language Learning (ELL) Haitian immigrant students in New York City, ages 14 to 21.
our vision
Our vision is for Haitian immigrant youth to be grounded in their culture, able to build community, and engaged in a fight for equal access to quality education for themselves and all immigrants. We envision a public school system that is equal, compassionate, and inclusive, and where all students, including immigrants, achieve success and reach their full potential.
our mission
Our mission is to transform the lives of Haitian newcomer youth through education and leadership development and to support them in the fight to address immigrant education issues both in the community and citywide.
our culture
We derived our name from the Flanbwayan tree, known for its vibrant red flowers and found throughout Haiti. The tree symbolizes strength, patience, and growth—values that guide our work and reflect our mission.
At Flanbwayan, we serve newly arrived Haitian immigrant youth ages 14–21, providing vital support as they navigate life in the United States. From understanding public transportation to adjusting to the school system, we help young people build the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed to thrive in their new environment.
our history
Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project was founded in 2005 as a youth membership–based organization serving Haitian immigrant English Language Learners (ELLs) in New York City, ages 14 to 21. We provide culturally and linguistically responsive services that support immigrant youth and families, enhancing their quality of life through education and community connection.
Rooted in culture and language, Flanbwayan creates a safe and welcoming space where youth can build community, access resources, and strengthen connections to schools and other community-based organizations. The program also fosters leadership development, empowering immigrant youth to build confidence, advocate for themselves, and develop their collective voice.
